Leixões will restrict the access of light vehicles to the port area in 2022
One more step in the process of decarbonization
This Wednesday, March 24, a Collaboration Protocol was signed defining the new conditions of access and transit of light vehicles to the port of Leixões to be in force from January 1, 2022.
The working group resulting from this protocol and led by the Administração dos Portos do Douro, Leixões and Viana do Castelo (APDL), includes the GPL - Empresa de Trabalho Portuário do Douro e Leixões, the Sindicato dos Estivadores, Conferentes e Tráfegos dos portos do Douro e Leixões, and the port operators TCGL-Terminal de Carga Geral e Granéis de Leixões and TCL - Terminal de Contentores (Yilport Leixões).
This protocol reflects a commitment to decarbonisation of the port of Leixões assumed by the various stakeholders in the port ecosystem. Every day, more than a thousand light vehicles enter the port of Leixões, releasing, approximately, a total of 246 kg of carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) into the atmosphere. Besides contributing to the reduction of emissions, the new rules and procedures will also increase safety and security within that port area and free up more space for port operations.
The working group will define the measures necessary to implement the conditioning of access and transit of light vehicles and increase safety and security in the port area, including the "Safety Passport" and the "Basic Safety Induction" model for port users. New pedestrian access and parking areas will also be evaluated, as well as the operation model for the electric port shuttle, and the strengthening of the support infrastructure for electric mobility, among other topics.
